As one of the leading rice-producing provinces in the country, there is no shortage of beautiful rice fields. It is the connecting point between Phnom Penh and Thailand and is currently a vital link to Cambodia. In the main city of Battambang you will find a very peaceful area due to the fact that it is situated close to the Sangker River. It is a peaceful city to find accommodation, and there is plenty to see in the surrounding countryside as well.
Battambang Bamboo Train
The Battambang Bamboo Train is one of the most fun attractions for tourists. When you board the flat platform which is located on an old rail line you will travel down an 8-9 mile (14 km) track that will travel quite fast at times. There will be a driver who will make stops along the way as you enjoy the scenery and several photo opportunities available. It is not only used by tourists. When you visit the bamboo train you will get a glimpse of how the local people use the train to transport small goods and other items. There is also a resting point where you can stop and get refreshments and souvenirs. After stopping for a refreshing drink and shopping you will continue down the track and pass by rice fields and other parts of the scenic countryside.
Prasat Barsaet Temple
Prasat Barsaet Temple is located on a hill at Ba Set village. Ba Set village is about a 20 minute drive from Battambang City and along with the amazing temple that you find there you will also see a long and deep pond which never dries out through the dry season. This makes rice growing ideal and during the rainy season the water level rises higher than usual.
Prasat Wat Ek Temple
Prasat Wat Ek Temple is located at Piem Ek commune in which is about a 20 minute drive from Battambang City. At Prasat Wat Ek Temple you will find many ancient Angkorian-era temples and relics as you walk through the countryside surround the commune where it is located.
Prasat Phnom Banan Temple
Prasaat Banan Temple is located on the top of a high mountain at Koh Tey commune in the Ba Nan District which is about a 20 minute drive. At Prasat Banan Temple you will also find ancient temple relics some of which are from the Angkorian-era as well as two main natural wells named Chhung Achey and Bit Meas.
Phnom Sampov Mountain
Phnom Sampov Mountain is a natural resort located at the Sampov commune which is high up in the mountain area of Battambang Province. It is about a 15 minute drive up the mountain side. On top of the Sampov Mountain there is a Buddhist temple which is home to female monks who meditate and practice Buddhism in the same way male monks do in other temples around Cambodia. Not only will you find a temple to visit but you will find three natural wells named Pkar Slar, Lo Khuon, and Ak So Pheak. There are also other mountains on and around the Sampov Mountain which is home to millions of bats that tourists will sometimes get a glimpse of exiting the cave in huge numbers.
